Photobiomodulation (PBM), formerly known as low-level light therapy (LLLT), has been shown in preclinical studies to significantly improve skin healing by modulating oxidative stress and enhancing mitochondrial function.
After skin injury, there is a marked increase in oxidative stress, elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), accumulation of cellular damage markers, disruption of mitochondrial function, and activation of apoptotic pathways leading to cell death. PBM helps counteract these processes by reducing oxidative damage, lowering ROS levels, decreasing apoptotic signaling, and enhancing endogenous antioxidant defenses such as catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase.
Through these mechanisms, PBM supports faster and more efficient tissue repair.
